He was registered at birth as Nathan Herbert Fee, but haptised Charles Herbert Fee. No one, including Charlie, even understood why this was done but he went his entire life as Charles, though Charlie was the name he preferred and demanded.
Military notes for Charles Herbert Fee MSM
Enlisted in the Canadian Militia in 1912, serving with the 12th Manitoba Dragoons and the 79th Cameron Highlanders.

Enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Bustard Camp, Salisbury Plain, England on 23 October 1914; assigned regimental number 45632. Served throughout World War I with the Armoured Machine Gun Brigade No 1, subsequently redesignated the 1st Canadian Motor Machine Gun Brigade (1st CMMGB); most of his time was in France with some in Belgium. Awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in June 1918; at the time he held the rank of Quartermaster Sargeant. Discharged 19 September 1919 at Halifax as part of the post-war demobilization, holding the rank of Warrant Officer 2 with an appointment as Battery Sargeant Major (BSM). He suffered minor injuries, including a sprained knee, and was gassed twice leading to chronic bronchitis throughout his life.58

When their children were born, the couple were living in Banff, Alberta, Canada. For some reason, Dorothy did care for the only doctor in Banff, so she took the Canadian Pacific Rail to Vancouver where all three kids were born.
