Notes for William Lougheed
William was apparently the first child of James Lougheed’s first marriage. His name appears on the Lougheed monument in Britannia Cemetary and indicates he died in 1876 in his 70th year. His name on the stone does not necessarily mean that he was buried there - his brother Allen’s name is on there, too, and Allen definitely was not buried there. Dates can be incorrect as well. There is an entry from the Brampton COnservator for Friday, December 10, 1886 on page 3 under the heading “Immortelles -- Lougheed - At Britannia, on Friday evening, 3rd December 1886, Wm. Lougheed, aged 81 years.” This William must have been born around 1805. Could it be the same William?
We do not know if William was born in Canada or in the United States. He is said to have married and had two sons, William and Robert. The latter supposedly died during the Fenian Raids (1866?) from a cold. Other than a reference to William by his father in connection with a land purchase in 1835, we have not been able to place William in Canada. Whom did he marry? Where? Where did he live? Did he perhaps go to the United States at some point? Did either of his sons marry and have children? We would very much like to know.
