Notes for Wesley Lougheed
Wesley may have been the second child of James Lougheed’s first marriage. We have no date for either his birth or his death, but undoubtedly he was named for John Wesley. The only information given about him in the Perkins Bull Papers is that he married Martha Tilt, daught of Dr. Thomas Tilt. We cannot find any record of Wesley and Martha in either census or land records, nor can we locate Dr. Thomas Tilt. But there was a Westley Lougheed about whom we know the following:

- The Peel County Historical Atlas places him on Lot 7, Concession 1, East of Huron Street, Toronto Township with James in 1837.

- On December 12, 1838 James conveyed to Westley his rights to a lease of fifty acres of land which he had acquired with his son William in 1835. Less than three months later on March 1, 1839, Westley conveyed the land back to James, signing the document with an “X.” While James referred to William as his son, he did not so identify Westley. (These transcations are set out in the Township Papers for Lot 2, Concession 1, East of Huron Street, Toronto Township which are held by the Ontario Archives.)

- A Wesley Lougheed of Toronto Township, bachelor, married Sarah Strong of Toronto Township on September 28, 1832 at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Erindale. At some later date the couple moved to Wilmot Township, Waterloo County.

Their daughter Sarah Ann (born 1837 or 1838) married a Thomas Barlow of Egremont in 1860. Another daughter Margaret, born in Wilmot, married William Wallace of Bentick, Ontario in 1869 when she was 21. The dates seem to suggest Sarah Strong Lougheed may have died when Margaret was born and that her husband remarried the same year.

- Westly Lougheed of Wilmot Township married Janet Horneson August 18, 1847.

- In the 185 Census for Wilmot Township, Waterloo County, Westly, then 43, (born ca.1809) and Janet are listed with four children from her previous marriage and two from his. At some later date Westly and Janet moved to Grey County.

The question is, are we dealing with one person here whose name appears variously as Wesley, Westley or Westly, or are there two people, both likely related in some way but definitely two. Viviane McClelland opted for two; Jopie Loughead is sure that there is only one and dismisses the reference to Martha Tilt. Of course Martha could have been one of three wives.
