Notes for Dr. Marvin Norman Lougheed FRCP(C), FACR
Farmed through the Great Depression in Bagot, Manitoba. Skilled horseman, carpenter, and athlete, attended University of Manitoba then University of Iowa. BA in Radiation Physics 1943. Married Elsie Christine Sorensen of Dundas, Minnesota in 1943 and moved to Montreal, Quebec to study medicine while she tuned radio crystals for fighter aircraft. Received MD from McGill University in 1947. Completed rotating internship at the Montreal General Hospital; after a year of general practice completed specialty training at Swedish Tumor Institute (Seattle 1951), Diagnostic Radiology (McGill 1952), Radiotherapy (McGill 1953). Worked for 20 years at the Montreal General, Montreal Children's, Jewish General and Notre Dame hospitals; was on the teaching staff of McGill University and published many papers. Unselfconscious and self assured, he pioneered public and patient education, and fought tobacco companies about health risks of smoking. Throughout his years of practice he continued to advocate about the risks of tobacco addiction through political and organizational activities. Avid camper who trailered coast to coast with family. Loved to captain his home-made pontoon boat loaded with guests, BBQ, and lawn chairs. Loved a vigorous Sunday dinner to debate science, politics, philosophy or religion. Loved a good story or a practical joke. In 1971, moved to Roanoke, Virginia to establish the South-West Virginia Cancer Center. He served as Director, Radiation Therapy at Roanoke Memorial Hospital until retirement in 1989. Clinical Associate Professor, University of Virginia. President of Virginia Chapter of the American Society of Radiology and member of several Specialty organizations. In 1973, married Carole (Dunn) Thornhill of Montreal and lived in Roanoke with her children Joyce and Hugh; first on a 300 acre farm near Boones Mill, Virginia, where he designed and built their house, and later in Roanoke where he retired. He was an active member of St. Johns Episcopal Church with special involvement in the Outreach Ministry.
