Thomas and Margaret owned and farmed Lot 9, Concession 2 in Metcalfe Township, Middlesex County. In September 1881, he and Margaret sold the west half of this lot to their son Anthony. Their son Thomas Samuel inherited the east half. Thomas Hughes was active in local politics and was elected to the Middlesex County Council as Reeve for several years.
