It appears that James and Anna Maria lived first in Canada but after 1848 for a time in the United States. In 1862 Anna Maria and her two children settled in Metcalfe Township, Middlesex County on the west half of Lot 9, Concession 1. This farm was located across the road from that of her sister Margaret and her husband Thomas Hughes. Anna Maria was by then a widow. She sold her farm in October 1876. It is possible that she and her children retruend to the United States at that time. (A social note in the Petrolia Advertister of 21 May 1896 mentioned that “Dr. and Mrs. W. S. Swayzer [sic] of Los Angeles, Cal. are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Reid, Main St.” (Mrs. Reid would have been a first cousin.)
