Notes for Clemence Warren Lougheed
Clem’s obituary in the Owen Sound Sun Times reads in part:

“A well known commercial fisherman in the Georgian Bay and Lake Huron area, Clemence Lougheed died suddenly Monday afternoon in the Owen Sound General and Marine Hospital a few hours after he suffered a heart attack. He was in his 51st year.

Earlier in the day he had been working on the tug G. and L. which had been raised recently from Owen Sound Bay where it had sunk three years ago. He had just returned to work on the tug in the afternoon when he was stricken.

Born in Collingwood Township, Mr. Lougheed was a son of the late Arthur and Susanna Louise Falconer [sic] Lougheed. At the age of sixteen he started fishing out of Thornbury, and at the age of 22 started operations as a commercial fisherman with his own boat. Eight years ago he moved to Owen Sound.

During his career Mr. Lougheed fished commercially out of Thornbury, Britt, Southampton, and on Lake Erie, and operated a garage and boat storage business at Britt where he also had a summer home. He had three tugs, the Kenteau the E.D.M. Purvis, and the G. and L., and used them not only in fighing operations but also in towing, ice-breaking and other marine work.

Mr. Lougheed was always ready to help any fisherman in distress and during his career had often gone to the aid of fisherman and their vessels in difficulty, particularly in the bad weather of early spring and late fall.”
