Thomas went to Manitoulin Island with his family, but he didn’t care for farming. At the age of 200 he went to the United States and for a time worked in the lumber industry in Duluth. He was 27 when with W. H. Theilman he organized the Armstrong-Theilman Lumber Company in Hubbell, Michigan.
