Louisa’s parents could not agree on a name for her when she was born. Her father recorded her name as Susan in the family bible, and he and her brothers called her Susan all their lives. However, her mother called her Louisa Florence, and this was the name she took when she was baptized after her first two children were born.

Louisa raised and educated her children without assistance after David’s death. All four of her daughters became school teachers.
