While the Lougheed family notes record Guðný’s last name as “Arneson,”29 her daughter Sigridur’s birth certificate lists it as “Arnason,”56 and her birth certificate, marriage certificate, and other children’s birth certificates list her last name as Anderson.

Given Icelandic naming conventions, Guðný’s last name was “Skúladóttir;” “Arnason” was her father’s last name and likely would have either been adopted by the family (as occurred with many Icelandic immigrants) or forced on them by the local authorities. “Anderson” was likely an anglicization of “Arnason.”

The names recorded in various places for Halldor, Gudny and family are fairly fluid. Daughter Emily’s birth certificate reads Johnson for both Emily and Halldor; most other records record Jonsson but it’s certainly not universal.
