Margaret was raised by her aunt and uncle, Margaret and George Johnston. There appears to be something af a mystery about her. In an obituary in the 20 February 1920 issue of The Bolton Enterprise it said she was a daughter of George Johnston, but she was never known as a Johnston. Her name appears with the names of the other children of Abraham and Mary Ann on the back of the marriage certificate found in Victoria, British Columbia. Family members say that one of Abraham’s children was raised in Bolton by relatives.

Margaret Amelia’s own children thought she was an orphan. A grandson of Louise Lougheed McAllister remembers his grandmother saying that one of the children was traded for a pig. Margaret Amelia is buried with her husband in Laurel Hill Cemetary in Bolton. Her name on the tombstone is Margaret A. Lougheed, not Johnston.
