Notes for James Lougheed
The Manitoba Morning Free Press of 3 May 1900 gave a detailed account of the accident which resulted in James’ death:

“Through a street car accident about 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon, James Lougheed of Gergen, one of the oldest and most widely known farmers in the vicinty of Winnipeg, was almost instantly killed. The accident happened on Main Street, at the corner of Logan Avenue. Mr. Lougheed was driving in a one-horse buggy, and was crossing the rtack in a slanting direction, evidently making for Logan Avenue, when the vehicle was either struck by the car, or in being turned rapidly to avoid it, upset. Mr. Lougheed was thrown to the ground and struck on the head. ...

Mr. Lougheed was about 76 years of age and was very short-sighted. To this and the wind, which must have confused him, the accident is probably due. ...

He [the motorman] states positively that the car did not touch the buggy, and believes it was over-turned by the sudden jerk which was given it in the driver’s efforts to get out of the way of the car. The fender of the car, which is made of wood, and easily broken, is uninjured, and bears out the motorman’s statement. The buggy is also uninjured, the left shaft only being broken off about a foot from the end. ...

Dr. McArthur states that the death was almost instantaneous. He arrived just as the old man was being carried in from the road and found that the pulse was beating very feebly.... The doctor states that merely a fall from the buggy of a man of his great age and weight would have been sufficient to have caused the concussion from which he died.”
