Richard and Matilda settled in London Township, Middlesex County where they lived on 50 acres of Lot 11, Concession 5 until 1871 when they moved to Adelaide Township in the same county and settled on Lot 6, Concession 2 South. Shortly before his death, Richard moved his family to a small parcel of land close to the town of Strathroy.

Richard died at the residence near Strathroy. He and Matilda where Mathodists but she became a baptist sometime after 1871. She died of “rheumatism of the heart”. Her obituary says in part:

“The deceased was a consistent member of the Baptist Church, and was held in the highest esteem by its members. The funeral on Monday was largely attended, some fifty vehicles following the remains to their last resting place in the Strathroy Cemetery.”
