Notes for Thomas Robert Lougheed
THere is some question about Thomas’ year of birth, but his age when he married along with his age at death point to 1834 as the likely year. A family bible with entries written in 1878 gives his birthday as 1 October 1833.
Notes for Thomas Robert & Margaret (Family)
The marriage of Thomas and Margaret is recorded in the Simcoe County Marriage Register (1858-1869), vol 1 p. 51:
“Thomas, 26, of Innisfil, born Ireland, s/o Thomas & Mary
m. Margaret Armstrong, 18, of Innisfil, born Ireland, d/o Robert & Anne
7 March 1860 by Rev. Edward Morgan
witness: Thomas Lougheed Sr. of Barrie”
At the time of the 1861 Census for Muskoka, Thoma, 28, and Margaret, 21, were living there with a son Thomas Robert, 1. James Lougheed, a brother, was living with them.
Later, perhaps around 1878, Thomas and Margaret moved to Manitoulin Island where they were recorded in the Township of Billings and Campbell (page 23) in the 1881 Census:

Margaret Lougheed had a little store on their farm. She and Thomas ran the post office from 1902-1906. Known as “Grandma Lougheed,” Margaret acted as mid-wife and assisted at the birth of many babies.
Grimsthorpe Cemetery is on Lougheed property, and their own son was the first to be buried there.
